CSK had a poor run this season and will look to redeem themselves with some valuable buys at the auction table next year.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK), one of the most distinguished Indian Premier League teams, has been scrutinized for its dismal performances in the ongoing IPL 2022. The four-time champions are on the brink of elimination with seven losses from 11 games played so far. Before the start of the 15th edition of the cash-rich event, CSK underwent a captaincy change which probably affected their game.
MS Dhoni had relinquished his captaincy and handed the baton to Ravindra Jadeja, but the move did not work out and the team’s performance saw a drastic fall. After multiple losses and minimum victories, Dhoni was given back the captaincy as the team looked to keep their playoffs hopes alive. But there have been loopholes in the team. And to cover up the flaws, CSK will look to build a stronger team in the next edition of the IPL and aim for some prolific players with great potential.
Three players CSK can target in IPL 2023 auction:
1. Ben Stokes
CSK needs an all-rounder who can create destruction with the bat as well as the ball. Someone who can hit the big shots as soon as he walks in, who can have command over the game, who can anchor the innings, and can provide a breakthrough while defending. And the English all-rounder ticks all boxes.
The four-time champions can play him at different positions in the team. With his amazing batting talents, Ben Stokes, as an experienced campaigner, may be incredibly useful. The Englishman’s bowling abilities are equally outstanding, as he can provide four overs as a frontline bowler.
Ravindra Jadeja, the all-rounder, has not been able to put up a good show this season, and the captaincy burden hurt him. As the team is already going through captaincy woes, CSK will look for a potential candidate to step into MS Dhoni’s shoes and Stokes might be the right fit.
2. Sam Curran
The Surrey cricketer had been associated with CSK in previous seasons of the IPL. After making a remarkable entry in the IPL with the Punjab-based franchise, CSK had roped him in the 2020 season which turned out to be a disaster for the team but Curran impressed everyone with his all-round performance. He was retained for the 2021 season for his good showing.
3. Akshay Wadkar
The 27-year-old wicketkeeper batter is an uncapped player who represents Vidarbha in the Indian domestic setup. His performance in the recent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) was noteworthy as he led his team to the semi-finals.
Although Wadkar does not have much experience as he has played only 15 T20s scoring 277 runs in 14 innings averaging 23.08 and striking at 100.36. He has two centuries from his last three games for Vidarbha in first-class cricket and has been one of the consistent players for the side.
